On this day in 2004, World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson announced he would no longer be playing rugby for England.

Having turned in one of his best career performances to clinch the trophy in the final against Australia in November, 2003.

Johnson played 84 tests in his illustrious career, which also included a Six Nations Grand Slam, captaining England 39 times.

He would continue playing for Leicester Tigers, where he spent 17 years, up until 2006 making a total of 362 appearances, clocking up 90 points mostly as Lock.
