On this day in 1997, Middlesbrough FC were fined £50,000 by the FA for cancelling their Premier League game against Blackburn Rovers at short notice.
Cancelled games, usually the fodder of non-league clubs, result in a three-point deduction and subsequent fine.
Manager, Bryan Robson claimed his side were unable to play due to a combination of injury and sickness and therefore cancelled the game just 24 hours prior to the scheduled kick-off on 21st, December 1996.
Middlebrough’s flagship signing at the time, Italian Fabrizio Ravenelli said: “I reckon we will be relegated, I’m almost certain of it.”
Turns out he was right on this occasion as the north-east side were relegated at the end of the 1996-97 campaign, just two points from safety.
