‘Iron’ Mike Tyson was granted permission to enter the UK for his heavyweight bought with Brit, Julius Francis.
Former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Tyson, had been banned from entering the country due to his conviction and subsequent prison-term for rape, in 1992.
Jack Straw, then Home Secretary, made the call to allow the match, held at the MEN Arena in Manchester, stating: “I have looked very carefully at the representations that have been submitted today to the Immigration Service by Mr Frank Warren and I consider that there are exceptional circumstances that justify my decision.
“I have also taken account of the effect on business in the Manchester area and of the inconvenience and disappointment of the many thousand members of the public who have purchased tickets for the fight.”
Tyson won the fight after 58 seconds of the second round, completely dominating Francis.
