Alan Kelly Snr – apparently the most famous of the three.

On this day 24 years ago, a somewhat remarkable occurrence took place in the Football League.

Goalkeeping brothers, Alan and Gary Kelly, playing for Preston North End F.C. and Bury F.C. respectively, lined up to play against one another. The game, played at Bury’s Gigg Lane, would finish Preston 1-2 Bury.

Alan and Gary’s father, Alan Senior, was also a goalkeeper who spent 25 years playing for Preston.

Unfortunately for Gary, he was the only one of the three who didn’t represent Northern Ireland at full international level.
