16 years ago, one of English rugby’s greats decided he’d had enough of getting knocked about by other massive guys for a living and retired.

Carling, who left his army commission to focus on rugby, spent his entire career at club level with London-based Harlequins, where he was mostly selected at either centre position.

The Wiltshire boy was selected as England captain at the ripe age of 22, making him the youngest to roll on the armband at that point.

He would go on to gather 72 caps for his country and score 54 points in the process.
