On this day (9th December) in 1992 Buckingham Palace announced Charles and Diana had separated. The announcement came more than ten years after nearly one billion television viewers in 74 countries tuned in to witness the marriage of Prince Charles On July 29, 1981. Charles and Diana’s relationship was constantly in the public eye thanks to excessive tabloid coverage. In ’92, in exchange for a generous settlement, and the right to retain her apartments at Kensington Palace and her title of “Princess of Wales,” Diana agreed to relinquish the title of “Her Royal Highness” and any future claims to the British throne.
